NEW VIDEO-BASED WORKSHOP ADDRESSES BULLDOZER SAFETY
Logger Education Programs: video
INTRODUCTION: The West Virginia Division of Forestry, under the guidance of the West Virginia Forestry Association's Safety Committee, has produced a Dozer Safety video designed for volunteer non-expert discussion leaders to use with state Logger Training and Education (LT&E) program workshops or for logging contractors to use at employee safety meetings.
GENERAL FEATURES: The 18-minute VHS videotape covers the following topics:
- Personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Dozer inspection at beginning of shift.
- Beginning work.
- Construction of haul roads, skid roads, and landings.
- Winching/extracting.
- Installing Best Management Practices/site reclamation.
- Dozer shutdown/end of day inspection.
- Loading and transportation of dozer.

Fig. 1: Video and Discussion Leader's Guide cover a
variety of dozer safety topics.
OPERATION: A Discussion Leader's guide accompanies the video. The video and guide follow the "FRA style" of video segments alternating with discussion questions for participants. A workshop or employee safety session using the video takes approximately one hour to complete.
APPLICATION: The Dozer Safety video-based workshops have been conducted at West Virginia Logger Safety Initiative (LSI) classes with very positive feedback Although the video was produced in West Virginia, it does not make direct reference to any specific state and is certainly applicable for logging safety programs throughout the Eastern U.S., wherever there is hilly terrain and hardwood timber-where dozers are used for skidding and for road construction.

Fig. 2: Video topics apply especially to dozers used for
skidding and road construction in hilly terrain.
COST: To place an order for the video, please contact the West Virginia Forestry Association at the address shown below. The current price for the video and accompanying Discussion Leader's Guide is $15 for West Virginia Forestry Association Members and for government and university personnel; the price is $25 for others.
